Biosecurity that passes the test.

Biosecurity is everyone’s responsibility. Just one slip can have catastrophic consequences for animals, businesses, industries - even public health and safety. But there’s thinking that your farms are prepared to handle an outbreak - and then there’s knowing they’re prepared.

Setting a new standard for traceability

Woodlands and Darwalla, 50/50 owners and live bird suppliers into Golden Cockerel is responsible for close to 50% of SE Queensland broiler meat production. But using paper documents to track over 50 million chickens per year for the Group, plus hundreds of daily movements of people, trucks and machinery, wasn’t just frustrating for staff – it left the business exposed, with limited traceability over its operations.

With Onside, Darwalla Group can now see every movement, in real time. In the event of an outbreak, check-in, risk and incident information is instantly available for investigators, enabling a rapid response and minimising disruption for the business and its supply chain.

By the numbers

4,176 - check-ins recorded in March 2025

1,484 -
connected people movements, traced in March 2025

234
- vehicle movements recorded in March 2025

“Onside is working with the wider industry to help close the gaps in biosecurity. They haven’t just provided the technology, but also the experience and expertise to help us tighten up our measures”.
- Juan Corredor, QHSE Manager, Darwalla Group

Are we prepared for an avian flu outbreak?

When Australia’s H7/H9 avian influenza outbreaks were first reported in 2024, Darwalla Group decided to test its biosecurity response time in a mock exercise designed against a far more lethal avian influenza variant, H5N1. The results showed the company wasn’t prepared to handle an H5N1 outbreak.

Darwalla needed a biosecurity management system that could provide watertight traceability, giving government investigators, staff and business partners complete confidence in its biosecurity management.

    BEFORE ONSIDE

  • Inefficient: Relied on paper documents to record the movements of people, machines and livestock across 40+ properties in the region.

  • Vulnerable: Biosecurity Queensland had concerns about the company’s traceability.

  • Compliance: Failed an internally imposed mock biosecurity exercise.

    AFTER ONSIDE

  • Fast and effective: Quick and easy mobile check-in for people moving between locations.

  • Robust traceability: Realtime people movement + GPS truck tracking integrations can be instantly shared with regulators.

  • Compliance: Biosecurity Queensland are now confident in the company’s ability to track an outbreak.

How can we minimise a biosecurity breach?

Speed matters. When a risk is identified, the business needs to isolate animals, implement cleaning protocols and notify state biosecurity departments to begin an investigation. The faster the threat is contained, the lower the disruption (and cost) to the business.

With Onside’s mobile app, each visitor to Darwalla farms (staff and contractors included) must check-in and answer biosecurity screening questions. Darwalla will be instantly notified if any answers are unsatisfactory and could lead to an incursion - giving the business greater preventative controls.

“Onside is fast, simple and practical. We track hundreds of daily movements between locations, people, machines and livestock. With Onside, people can scan and check-in within a few seconds - no hassle, no delay.”
- Juan Corredor, QHSE Manager, Darwalla Group

How can we become a trusted supplier?

Just one weak link can jeopardise an entire supply chain. Darwalla Group has a close relationship with its partners and a highly effective, compliant, real-time biosecurity solution protects both the business and the wider industry.

Onside offers Darwalla’s industry partners:

  • A fast and easy-to-use mobile app, that’s easy for partner staff and contractors to use in the field, when visiting Darwalla farms.

  • Confidence in its ability to handle an outbreak quickly, with minimal supply chain disruption.

  • Proof of Darwalla’s on-going commitment to improving biosecurity in the poultry production industry.

  • Transparency and full traceability on all movements throughout its operations, as well as audit-ready reporting at any time.

“Biosecurity Queensland are very comfortable with the format and timeliness of the information we can provide them with Onside, as well as how it interlinks with our trucks and crews to provide real-time tracking”.
- Jonathan Millard, CEO, Darwalla Group

How can we stay compliant?

Failing their tracing simulation was a wake-up call for Darwalla Group - but Darwalla saw it as an opportunity and immediately began working directly with Biosecurity Queensland to ensure that the solution could provide the right information, in the right format, to help investigators.

Onside enables Darwalla to export real-time tracking data into simple, highly accurate reports showing investigators the exact information they need to see. Darwalla can work quickly and effectively with government teams, sharing audit-ready reports to identify and help control an outbreak.

How can we remove doubt over biosecurity?

Onside gives you powerful risk detection with every check-in.

Over the past 12 months, Onside’s check-in questions have been a frontline defense for rural properties, identifying potential risks before they become problems.

Out of 375,000 check-ins with answered questions, 10,000 flagged a potential risk, giving property owners and visitors instant visibility and the chance to take action. By proactively surfacing risks, Onside helps safeguard rural operations, ensuring people stay informed and properties remain protected.
